41. The Long Walk

We successfully complete our overnight walking marathon in aid of Breast Cancer charities in our decorated bras (mine has strategically located sequinned stars over where my nipple should be). There are some inspirational women taking part and I’m amazed by the sheer number of people involved – 15,000 - many of whom have had cancer or were walking in support of or in memory of loved ones. I’m reminded of a comment on Facebook challenging the concept of sponsored events, suggesting that they were a kind of vanity and why not just give the money directly without the fuss. But, taking part, I do feel that I have achieved some sort of personal milestone on the road back to fitness and I am again reminded of just how fortunate I have been to be diagnosed so early and to be fit and healthy once again. I do feel I want to give something back and our sponsors have been numerous and generous in this respect. I don’t feel quite so fit at 20 miles, but a strong coffee and a croissant helps and we finish in fine spirits, despite the cold and aching feet.
